On Experiencing God — Psalm 18 [a practical, biblical study of scripture]

Excerpt from Devotional Sessions | Practical Spirituality

He sent from above, He took me; He drew me out of many waters. He delivered me from my strong enemy, From those who hated me, For they were too strong for me. They confronted me in the day of my calamity, But the Lord was my support. He also brought me out into a broad place; He delivered me because He delighted in me.(Psalm 18:17-19, prompted from Devotional Sessions – Phil Rice).

Let’s not rush into and past this passage of scripture. If you can, find some headspace today and read through these words several times. Where do you find that you need the Lord’s support? This passage says that it is he who draws out and delivers. It is he who supports. It is he who brings out into wide open spaces. He does all of this because he delights in us.

Where are the places that feel hard? What are the situations that seem challenging or even impossible? Feel free to write a few of them down in a journal or smartphone, if that seems helpful. Take a second and invite God’s spirit to help you experience his support. Don’t move on from here too quickly. What does his support look like in this particular instance? Take some time to meditate on whatever comes to mind. And finally, reflect on this reality — he enjoys you. He enjoys being with you. Enjoys being near you.

My personal engagement with this session

I so appreciate the honesty of this psalm. It’s the honesty that enables me to relate to and cling to these truths. God is my support. God is the one who frees me. It is he who brings me to openness and healthy connection to him and other people. And in the midst of all of it, he delights in me. And he enjoys being with me through the process. Thank you God for enabling me to experience you in this way.
