On Expressing God — Matthew 12:33 [a practical, devotional study of scripture]

Excerpt from Devotional Sessions | Practical Spirituality

The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal till it was all leavened (Matthew 13:33, prompted from Devotional Sessions – Phil Rice).

Take a moment and mediate on this parable. Ask God how this parable pertains to the way you express the kingdom of God in your context. What does it mean that the leaven is hidden? Why use leaven as an example of the kingdom of God? Write down and meditate on any aspect of this parable that God brings to mind. Thank him for bringing understanding to these words of Jesus.

My personal engagement with this session

I am struck by the idea of expressing God’s kingdom in this manner. It doesn’t take very much leaven to impact the dough. Leaven is hidden, it’s not loud or obtrusive. It works throughout the dough as it is kneaded into the whole. What a beautiful picture of the graceful movement of the spirit of God bringing change over time. This parable gives me freedom to be who I am and allows me to bring the beauty of life in God to my environment in a way that is true to who I am.
